San Francisco ferry operator Red and White Fleet has recently welcomed the Enhydra, a new hybrid passenger ferry, to its line-up of vessels.
The 600-passenger vessel is the largest of its kind in the United States and is the first aluminium-hulled, lithium-ion battery plug-in hybrid vessel built from the keel up under US Coast Guard regulations.
Enhydra is 39 metres long with a 9-metre beam and can cruise in all-electric mode at seven knots for up to two hours, consuming less than 30 litres per hour and ensuring near-silent operation.
The vessel comes equipped with elegant interior finishes, clear handrails for maximum viewing capacity, a state-of-the-art sound system, and personal audio headsets for audio tours in 16 languages.
Red and White Fleet hopes that, with the introduction of Enhydra and other similar vessels, they will achieve a zero emissions fleet by 2025.
