A total of 25 people suffered varying degrees of injury after the ferry they were riding in ran aground just off Ibiza in Spain's Balearic Islands on Saturday, August 28.

The high-speed catamaran ferry San Gwann, owned by German operator FRS, had just departed Ibiza and was sailing for the nearby island of Formentera when it struck a rocky outcrop in the late evening (local time) of Saturday.

One of the passengers, a 10-year-old boy, sustained serious injuries and had to be airlifted to hospital in Mallorca. Meanwhile, most of the other injured passengers have been cleared for discharge, a local official told reporters on Sunday, August 29.

San Gwann had 35 passengers and 12 crewmembers embarked when the grounding occurred.

Officials said the incident is being investigated and clarified that no oil spills have been detected in the area despite the damage suffered by the ferry.
