Bangkok ferries resume operational sailings following electric propulsion refit

Baird Maritime

The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA) recently welcomed 12 of its commuter ferries back into service following replacement of their diesel engines with battery-powered outboard motors.

The FRP-hulled, 30-passenger vessels have each been fitted with two Torqeedo 10kW electric outboards that draw power from lithium batteries.

The installation of all-electric propulsion on existing vessels will enable the BMA to extend its commuter ferry service to the inner city area where stricter environmental regulations are being enforced.

The 12 ferries join seven vessels that had undergone a similar modernisation programme late last year. As with the recently re-engined ferries, the first seven BMA vessels had their diesel engines replaced with Torqeedo outboards.
