25 killed, others missing after river ferry sinks in northern Bangladesh

Bangladeshi media reports that 25 people were killed after a river ferry sank in the northern district of Panchagarh on Sunday, September 25.

The unnamed vessel was transporting devotees to a Hindu temple when the incident occurred.

Authorities have not yet provided details on how many people were on board the ferry, though some passengers said the vessel had more than 70 occupants when it sank.

The recovered bodies so far include those of 12 women and eight children.

A number of survivors were reportedly able to swim to shore following the sinking. However, 30 people who were on board the ferry are still unaccounted for.

Search and rescue operations were still ongoing as of 21:00 local time on Sunday.

A local official said a committee has been formed to look into the events that led to the tragedy.
