Hapag-Lloyd Cruises' fleet of vessels will discontinue using heavy fuel oil and begin operating exclusively on marine gas oil (MGO) with a maximum sulphur content of 0.1 per cent in July of next year, the company said on Monday, September 30.
The use of low sulphur MGO is expected to reduce the fleet's emissions of sulphur and particulates by as much as 80 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively.
Further, the company says its vessels' global routes are to be planned and carried out with an average speed that will reduce fuel consumption by over one third, further minimising the fleet's carbon footprint.
