Construction is expected to start in May for Norwegian Cruise Line's futuristic PortMiami Terminal B after Miami-Dade County commissioners unanimously approved plans.

The county will invest up to US$100 million to build the facility, augmented by funds coming from Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH).

Commissioners also agreed to advance project costs not to exceed an additional $65 million.

NCLH will reimburse the county for all costs exceeding $100 million.

Completion is planned by November 8, 2019, for the debut of Breakaway Plus-class ship Norwegian Encore.

Designed by Miami firm Bermello Ajamil and Partners, the 15,468-square-metre terminal will be constructed to LEED Silver standards, focusing on innovation in design and terminal operation to optimise energy performance, indoor air quality, water efficiencies and maximise the use of local materials and resources.

The nautilus-inspired terminal, which will accommodate ships of up to 5,000 passengers, will feature innovative lighting, a dedicated lounge and service area, indoor and outdoor waiting areas, more efficient embarkation and disembarkation processes, security screening and luggage check-in.
