VESSEL REVIEW | Haifeng 1001 & Haifeng 1002 – Long-endurance jackups for offshore wind installation duties

Baird Maritime

Chinese manufacturer Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) recently delivered two offshore installation vessels in a series ordered by local conglomerate China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) for operation by its CCCC Haifeng Wind Power division.

Classed by China Classification Society, the jackup installation vessels Haifeng 1001 and Haifeng 1002 will be deployed by CCCC Haifeng Wind Power in support of the offshore renewables market. Each vessel has an LOA of 134 metres, a beam of 50 metres, a draught of 6.6 metres, a depth of 11 metres, an operating speed of just over nine knots, and a range of 3,000 nautical miles. An endurance of 45 days means the vessels can perform installation works for sustained periods before they require refuelling and resupply.

The open deck on each vessel can carry up to two 15MW wind turbines and their associated components. A DP2 system that operates in conjunction with three 2,500kW bow thrusters and three 3,000kW stern thrusters allows turbine installation to be safely performed at depths of up to 70 metres under a broad range of sea conditions including in ice class B areas.

The 130-metre-long pile legs and the installation equipment are suitable for working with clay, sand, and other soil types.

Each vessel boasts a fully welded steel hull with a streamlined bow, a square stern, a double keel, a continuous deck, and a forward accommodation block that can house 130 crewmembers. Located amidships is an unobstructed working deck. A pile-circling, full-slewing crane is fitted on the starboard side at the stern while a lower-capacity auxiliary crane is installed near the bow.

The vessels differ only in crane lifting capacity, with Haifeng 1001's main crane having a capacity of 2,500 tonnes and the one on Haifeng 1002 being able to lift up to 1,800 tonnes.
