Scottish firm to test new marine fuel derived from waste vegetable oil

ScottishPower Renewables has launched a pilot project wherein waste vegetable oil will help power the crewboats that are working on the company's East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm 43 kilometres off Suffolk.

The fuel will be made from a blend of 30 per cent hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) and conventional diesel and will be trialled on two crewboats provided by Great Yarmouth-based NR Marine Services.

ScottishPower Renewables said the fuel is created from 100 per cent waste vegetable oils and holds a proof of sustainability certificate from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) system. The company expects a 30 per cent reduction in equivalent CO2 emissions from the two vessels.
