Plans refined for UK’s Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm

Baird Maritime

Ørsted has published its updated plans for the proposed Hornsea Project Three offshore wind farm project, more than 120 kilometres off the north Norfolk coast in England.

If built to its full capacity of 2.4GW, it could supply electricity needs for more than two million homes.

Among the amendments made after extensive consultation: the maximum number of turbines has been reduced from 342 to 300; the cable corridor width has been refined from 200 metres to 80 metres after environmental and technical assessments; and the onshore construction period has been reduced to two phases and three years less than first thought.

Construction is expected to start in 2020 at the earliest and be operational by 2025 also at best.

Ørsted said it expects to submit a planning application in the second quarter this year. If successful construction is expected to start in 2020.

Meanwhile, Ørsted has selected Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) as exclusive supplier for the wind turbines for Hornsea Project Two, which will be the world's biggest offshore wind farm when operational in 2022.

The project will deploy the 8MW turbine with 167-metre rotor.

Hornsea Project Two will be built 89 kilometres from the Yorkshire coast and has a capacity of 1.4GW, meaning it will produce enough green energy to power more than 1.3 million UK homes.
