The Norwegian government is set to open a new wind power research centre that will work on innovations to make wind power more affordable, more efficient, and more sustainable.

The NorthWind centre will be led by local research institute SINTEF and will include energy company Equinor, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA), the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and the University of Oslo as partners.

The centre will draw on Norwegian research and industry's long-standing expertise in offshore projects.

The country's government will invest NOK120 million (US$13.7 million) in the new centre.
