UK marine engineering firm Ocean Kinetics has begun installing floating caisson segments that will form new quays at Scotland's Aberdeen Harbour under a £350 (US$460 million) expansion project.
The structures were towed from floating storage at Invergordon in the Cromarty Firth to Nigg Bay in Aberdeen. When in position, the caissons are ballasted with seawater, before being filled with rock and topped with concrete to form the new quay.
Each caisson is approximately 51 metres long, 12 metres wide, and 16 metres deep with a displacement of 5,500 tonnes.
