The Buffalo District of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has awarded a US$1.13 million contract to conduct dredging of the federal navigation channel in Fairport Harbor, a deep draught commercial harbour located in the City of Fairport, Ohio, during the summer of 2019.
The contract has been awarded to Luedtke Engineering Company based in Frankfort, Michigan. Under the contract, approximately 130,000 cubic metres of sediment material is to be dredged this year.
The contractor is anticipated to begin work in July with dredging to be performed throughout the navigation channel. Project depths are 7.6 metres in the entrance and outer harbour, 7.3 metres in the lower river, 6.4 metres in the upper river, and 5.4 metres in the turning basin.
The frequency of dredging in Fairport Harbor is subject to the availability of funds and when sufficient funding is in place. Fairport Harbor was last dredged in 2017, removing approximately 195,000 cubic metres of material.
The USACE scheduled dredging every 1 to 2 years in Fairport Harbor in order to maintain federally authorised depths.
