Van Oord has been contracted by the ports and railways company of Mozambique (CFM) to carry out emergency dredging works in the Port of Beira.

The Rotterdam-based company said the trailing suction hopper dredger Volvox Atalanta would dredge the port access channel to its original width and depth. It will be assisted by the Sagar Manthan for bed-levelling operations.

The port of Beira acts as a gateway to the central interior area of the country and the land-locked nations of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The project will start soon and take six months to complete, Van Ooord said.
