Philippine conglomerate San Miguel Corporation has begun work to help rid Metro Manila's Pasig River of as much as 50,000 tonnes of waste every month.
The project seeks to restore the optimal depth and natural flow of the river, which became heavily polluted beginning as far back as the 1960s.
The five-year project officially commenced on Wednesday, June 9. Dredging will also be carried out as part of the works.
The project is being executed by San Miguel in cooperation with the city government of Manila, the Metro Manila Development Authority, the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Department of Public Works and Highways, and the Philippine Coast Guard.
