Meridian Port Services (MPS), a joint venture between UK-based Meridian Port Holdings and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, has completed the entire phase one works of the Tema Port Expansion Project (also known as Terminal 3 of Tema Port) in Ghana.
The new harbour basin was created on a three-kilometre-long beach directly on the Atlantic Ocean and right on the Meridian Timeline. Building into the sea, from the beach, the breakwater root goes 1,550 metres into the ocean with a two-kilometre-long arm extending eastwards from the root of the breakwater parallel to the quay wall.
The 3,558-metre-long breakwater is harbouring a vast 450 hectares of maritime waterfront.
The new harbour basin is accessible through a 3,500- by 225-metre entrance channel into a turning basin/circle of 500 metres in diameter. The access channel has been dredged to 18.7 metres, the turning basin to 17.4 metres, and the portion by the quay wall to 16.9 metres to accommodate 16-metre draught vessels to dock alongside all berths.
The phase one scope of works included building a 1,000-metre-long wharf which consists of three berths and a 98-hectare terminal facility on land reclaimed from the sea.
