Cutter suction dredger Spartacus delivered to DEME

Baird Maritime

Dutch builder Royal IHC formally handed over the new cutter suction dredger Spartacus to DEME on Tuesday, August 3.

Royal IHC said the 44,180kW newbuild is the world's largest self-propelled cutter suction dredger and is designed to be capable of dredging at depths of as much as 45 metres. It also features a propulsion system that can be powered by different types of fuel including LNG, diesel, and heavy fuel oil.

The dredger also has a waste heat recovery system and an onboard workshop with a vibration-insulated floor, making it possible for maintenance and repair of the cutterheads to be carried out even during operations.

Spartacus will soon depart to serve its first assignment, the Abu Qir project in Egypt. The project will involve reclamation of 1,000 hectares of new land as well as channel deepening works.
