Danfoss Power Solutions' Editron division is partnering with Estonian builder Baltic Workboats to supply the electric propulsion system for a new hybrid passenger and bicycle ferry ordered by Flemish operator DAB Vloot.
The hybrid ferry is designed to transport up to 50 passengers and 25 bicycles at a time. It will primarily operate in fully electric mode only, which will help the Belgium government achieve its target of cutting transportation emissions by 27 per cent before 2030 compared to 2005 levels.
While Editron is supplying the electric propulsion system, the ferry will also come with a Corvus Orca Energy battery pack installed as an additional source of propulsion power. Solar panels on the roof of the ferry will cover auxiliary power consumption.
Danfoss' Editron marine system will support an emission-free operation by allowing the captain to operate the vessel in fully electric mode only and charge the onboard battery with a fast-charging solution.
Editron will also equip the ferry with an additional diesel-powered engine to support the electric propulsion.
The new ferry is scheduled for delivery in 2023.
