Scottish Fisheries Minister Richard Lochhead has told fishing industry representatives that swift and immediate action is necessary to keep the industry alive in the wake of economic pressure and European Union restrictions.

"We are in the eye of a storm," Mr Lochhead said, as quoted by BBC News, in reference the EU Common Fisheries Policy.

Mr Lochhead spoke of dire circumstances in the Scottish fishing industry and warned of the need for the UK Government and the European Commission to make changes that would secure the industry before it was too late.
