The fleet of Russian fish processing vessels is set to expand by 100 within the next four years, the Russian Federal Agency for Fishery (Rosrybolovstvo) confirmed recently.

Agency head Ilya Shestakov said the 100 new vessels will all be built locally. Construction is already underway on 33 of the vessels at various yards.

The introduction of new vessels is part of a broad modernisation program that encompasses the country's entire offshore fish processing fleet and even onshore processing facilities.

The delivery of the new vessels will make it possible for Russia to upgrade up to 80 per cent of the offshore fish processing capacity in the Northern Fishery Basin and up to 40 per cent of the capacity in the Far East.
