VESSEL REVIEW | Gåsø Odin – Large hybrid wellboat with advanced fish treatment and transport systems

Baird Maritime

Norwegian aquaculture support vessel operator Frøy Gruppen has taken delivery of a new wellboat built by Sefine Shipyard of Turkey.

Designed by Møre Maritime in compliance to DNV class rules, Gaso Odin measures 83.2 by 20 metres and has capacity for 4,500 cubic metres. The vessel is powered by a hybrid propulsion system and is designed for closed technology that meets current and future requirements for fish welfare.

The design work emphasised circulation with arrangements for oxygenation as well as filtration, UV cleaning, and RSW cooling. Key equipment includes a fish processing system from Cflow, PTG Frionordica RSW plants, a Quantum reverse osmosis plant, a Wingtech fish counter, a Redox oxygen system, a CM Aqua Technologies water treatment system, and an eight-line delousing system. A DP2 system and MacGregor deck cranes are also fitted.

The propulsion system consists of four Yanmar 6EY22ALW medium-speed diesel engines, four Helseth propellers, Nogva Heimdal gearboxes, a Kongsberg Maritime steering system, side thrusters from Brunvoll and Schottel, a Scania DI13 emergency generator, and a Corvus Orca Energy 508kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

ABB meanwhile provided a DC power distribution system and a power and energy management system (PEMS). The DC power distribution system will optimise energy use on board by drawing on the main engines or the battery pack or a combination of both, as needed. The PEMS will ensure optimal use of the vessel's total power resources.

The use of a DC setup also offers the benefit of requiring fewer components, filters, and equipment compared to an AC system with regard to supplying power to the fish handling systems.

The vessel also has space for a Viking MOB boat with a dedicated davit. NorSap provided crew seats for the wheelhouse while the galley has equipment from Beha-Hedo Industrier. The navigation and communication electronics were supplied by Furuno.

Gaso Odin has already begun operating in support of Norwegian salmon farming company SalMar in fulfillment of a long-term contract.
