VESSEL REVIEW | Dønning – Compact netting boat for Norway’s Hellnes Fisk

Baird Maritime

A new all-aluminium net fishing boat has been delivered to Hellnes Fisk, a fishing company based at the western Norwegian town of Elnesvågen.

Named Dønning, the compact boat was built by Kewatec Aluboat of Finland. The 10.66- by 4.7-metre hull provides adequate space for a spacious wheelhouse with a comfortable steering position, a salon with a galley and a seating area, two double-berth cabins, a toilet with shower, and a drying room. Up to 20 tonnes of cargo can also be carried, allowing crews to target large catches while maintaining efficiency and productivity.

An external steering position is strategically placed on the deck to facilitate efficient fishing operations. This external station ensures that the crew has optimal visibility and better control during net hauling compared to remaining in the wheelhouse.

The vessel is powered by a Scania DI13 298kW engine driving a propeller via a ZF 325IV gearbox and Quick bow and stern thrusters that offer improved manoeuvrability for net fishing. To support operations over greater distances, the vessel has a 2,000-litre fuel tank and a 215-litre freshwater tank. These resources ensure that the vessel can stay at sea for longer periods, thus increasing fishing efficiency.

The boat's navigation electronics include a combination of Simrad and Olex systems.
