Ecuadorian tuna industry still strong

The tuna industry in Ecuador remains strong despite the global economic crisis. The tuna industry currently employs over 12,000 workers and Conservas Isabel's Personnel Manager, Pablo Giler said that external market demand had so far been satisfactory.

"We have important commitments to fulfil the months of March and April," Mr Giler was quoted as saying by El Diario, "but we still don't know what will happen in May."

"We don't want to anticipate by saying that the workforce will be reduced because of the effects of the global crisis. While demand continues to exist in the market, production will continue."
