St Petersburg's Admiralty Shipyard has signed a 37 billion rubles (US$640 million) contract to build a fleet of six high-capacity factory trawlers for the Russian Fishery Company (RFC).

The subsidiary of the United Shipbuilding Corporation will build six ST-192 trawlers with a 108-metre overall length and a 21-metre beam.

The last is due to be completed by 2023, and there is also an option for two more trawlers, USC said.

The new vessels are expected to replace RFC's existing fleet of 12 factory vessels that average of 30 years of service, allowing RFC to renew its fleet in the next seven years.

"The conditions of the Far Eastern area mean that there are special quality and technical requirements for the new trawlers" said RFC general manager Andrei Teterkin.
