VESSEL REVIEW | Multi Arctic – Norway’s FSV acquires hybrid electric fish farm workboat

Baird Maritime

Norwegian aquaculture support specialist the FSV Group recently added a new hybrid-powered workboat to its fleet.

Multi Arctic was built by compatriot shipyard Fitjar Mekaniske Verksted (FMV) to perform numerous roles including towing, freight transport, and maintenance in support of fish farm operators. Design work was provided by Solstrand Trading.

The 27- by 12-metre, 359-tonne vessel is fitted with a 1,000kWh battery pack, which FMV claims can help reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 340 tonnes per year. The use of battery power means the vessel will have a significantly lower environmental impact, thus helping preserve the sensitive areas where many of Norway's offshore fish farms are located.

The remainder of the hybrid propulsion system includes two Scania DI16 90M engines, a propeller and gear arrangement from Nogva Heimdal, side thrusters from MB Hydraulikk, and a steering system from PMH.

Up to 190 cubic metres of assorted cargo can be carried on the open aft deck, which also has equipment from MB Hydraulikk. Loading and unloading are accomplished with the aid of two deck cranes provided by HS.Marine. The wheelhouse benefits from a full 360 degrees of visibility, allowing the crew to also oversee operations on the aft deck via a dedicated rearward-facing control station. All crew seats are from Alu Design and Services.

Also fitted are searchlights, navigation lights, and associated controllers as part of a package supplied by R Stahl Tranberg and navigation and communication electronics from Furuno.

Accommodation spaces include seven crew cabins, a lounge, a galley, and a mess. Maxship Inter was responsible for the interior design work while Beha Hedo Industrier provided the galley equipment. Safety equipment from Viking Norsafe and a firefighting system from Johnson Controls also fitted.
