US shipowner Maritime Partners and naval architects Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) have begun development of a new inland towboat that will be powered by methanol.
Hydrogen One will be fitted with methanol-to-hydrogen fuel cells, which EBDG claims will enable sailings of up to 550 miles (885 kilometres) at standard operational speeds in between refuelings.
Other partners on the project include ABB and e1 Marine.
Hydrogen One will be built according to US Coast Guard Subchapter M and IMO 2030 regulations. It is scheduled for completion by 2023.
