VESSEL REVIEW | Artemis – Whale-watching boat for Hawaiian waters

Baird Maritime

US-based tour operator Hawaiian Adventures has added a new catamaran vessel to its whale-watching and day excursion fleet.

Artemis is a 46- by 16-foot (14- by 4.8-metre) aluminium catamaran custom-built for mission-focused wildlife adventures along the Kona Coast of Hawaii. The long waterline and dual catamaran hulls ensure a smooth and stable ride whether exploring Kona's coastlines and shallow reefs or venturing far offshore into the deep pelagic zone off the island in search of rare and elusive wildlife species.

Two Volvo D6-IPS650 US EPA Tier III diesel inboard engines that each produce 510 hp (380 kW) at 2,250 rpm propel the vessel to a cruising speed of just over 20 knots. The engines, which are fed by two 300-gallon (1,135-litre) tanks, also generate minimal noise even at high speeds so that sightseeing trips can be conducted with little impact on the marine life in the surrounding waters.

The full walk-around main deck level, easily accessible elevated flybridge, and oversized water level swim platform give three unique vantage points for photographers and wildlife enthusiasts. Across both decks, comfortable and padded forward facing bucket seats ensure occupants are oriented in the right direction for the most ideal wildlife viewing.

A water-level swim platform with custom rail enclosure allows passengers to get as close as physically possible to the ocean without actually getting in the water. The shaded and elevated flybridge meanwhile has room for 15 people and provides a suitable vantage point for spotting wildlife.

The spacious main deck area provides a comfortable open-air ride, padded forward facing seats positioned at the optimal viewing angle for all passengers, and ample shaded and full-sun seating options. Just astern of the main seating area is a spacious toilet, a bar that serves cold drinks, and integrated rubbish receptacles.

The main deck and the aft swim platform are covered in non-slip EVA foam to enable occupants to walk around even without footwear.

The helm station features navigation electronics from Garmin. Responsive electronic controls as well as advanced joystick control allow the vessel to be precisely manoeuvred under a range of water conditions. Boat-wide audio allows for zone-controlled music and clear public address announcements. A full surround-sound hydrophone setup is also fitted. Underwater lights guarantee guests' safety during nighttime manta ray viewing trips off the coast.

Artemis holds a US Coast Guard certification for 49 passengers with an extended range offshore route, permitting the vessel to access deep waters up to 20 miles (32 kilometres) offshore.
