The third and final Ollis-class ferry built for the Staten Island Ferry service of the City of New York Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) was formally named and launched into the water at the Panama City, Florida facilities of Eastern Shipbuilding Group on Friday, March 26.
The 98- by 21-metre ferry has been named Dorothy Day after a long-time Staten Island resident who gained fame as a social activist and journalist. The vessel is scheduled to enter service in New York Harbor in 2022.
Like its sisters, Dorothy Day will be able to accommodate up to 4,500 passengers on each trip.
All three Ollis-class ferries were designed by Elliott Bay Design Group of Seattle.
