Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division has received a third contract modification from the US Navy for US$145 million to provide long-lead-time material and advance procurement activities for the fourth America-class amphibious assault ship (LHA).

This modification brings the total advance funding for the future LHA 9 to US$350 million.

Like its America-class sisters, the future LHA 9 will have a length of 257 metres, a displacement of approximately 45,000 tonnes, a well deck for smaller landing craft and amphibious vehicles, and flight deck and hangar space for helicopters and short-takeoff vertical landing (STOVL) tactical jet aircraft.
