The US Coast Guard has suspended the active search for four fishermen who had gone missing off the coast of Provincetown, Massachusetts, earlier this week.
Captain Wesley Hester, search and rescue (SAR) mission coordinator for the Coast Guard First District, said no trace of the crew of the fishing vessel Emmy Rose had been found even after a massive search that lasted over 38 hours and ended up covering an area of approximately 5,350 square kilometres.
The search had also involved the coast guard cutters Vigorous (pictured) and Key Largo, a motor life boat from Coast Guard Station Provincetown, an MH-60 Jayhawk, and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry patrol aircraft.
Emmy Rose was last reported at a point 32 kilometres northeast of Provincetown when its EPIRB sent out a notification at 01:00 local time on Monday, November 23.
The vessel's owner had earlier reported that four people were on board and that none of his calls to the vessel's satellite phone were being answered.
Only debris and an empty life raft were found by the time Vigorous arrived at the scene later in the day on Monday.
