The US Department of Transportation has awarded more than US$220 million in discretionary grant funding to improve port facilities in 15 states and territories through the Maritime Administration's (MARAD) Port Infrastructure Development Program.

Transportation secretary Elaine Chao said eight of the 18 eligible projects are located in so-called opportunity zones, which were established to revitalise economically distressed communities through private investments.

The grant recipients include two ports each in Texas and Washington State and one port each in Alaska, California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Virginia, and the US Virgin Islands.
