Federal funding secured for expansion of Georgia’s Port of Brunswick

The US federal government will allocate funding worth US$1.5 million for modifications to the existing federal navigation channel at the Port of Brunswick in the state of Georgia.

The expansion works will allow larger-capacity ships to access the port, which Georgia Ports Authority Executive Director Griff Lynch said is a vital gateway for roll-on/roll-off cargo.

The Brunswick Harbor Modifications Project will be undertaken to address the issue of large tides and resulting strong currents, which can cause navigation problems for larger vessels transiting to and from Colonel's Island Terminal. The US Army Corps of Engineers completed an environmental study in late May 2022 and found that the planned widening, expansion, operation, and maintenance of the harbour will have no significant impact on the surrounding marine environment.
