TT-Line and European shipbuilder Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) have signed a contract for the construction of two new roll on/roll off (Ro-Ro) ferries to replace the current Spirit of Tasmania vessels.
Described by Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman as the "single largest infrastructure investment in Tasmania's history", the build contract is worth €219 million (US$262 million) per vessel.
TT-Line Chairman Mike Grainger said work would start immediately on the 212-metre by 31.5-metre vessels and both will be delivered in time to begin operations on Bass Strait in 2021.
The purpose-built vessels will accommodate 1,800 passengers and up to 600 passenger vehicles.
