New Zealand's Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) has begun its probe into a fatal accident that occurred on a cargo ship in the Port of Gisborne on Wednesday, April 3.
Circumstances reported were that the crew of the Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier Coresky OL were lashing a stack of logs to the deck of the ship.
The crew were using a ship's crane to tighten wire ropes on the stack when a wire rope broke and recoiled, striking two crewmembers, at around 02:00 local time.
One of the crewmembers died after being rushed to hospital while the other suffered less serious injuries. The lone fatality has been identified only as a 50-year-old male.
Coresky OL was loading cargo prior to a planned departure for Incheon, South Korea, when the incident occurred.
