Vessel designer and builder Seachange New Zealand has been awarded a letter of intent (LOI) by Malta operator Virtu Ferries for the supply of a Ro-Pax ferry to be fitted with hydrofoils and electric propulsion.
Once completed, the vessel will measure 40 metres long and will be able to transport 250 passengers and 40 cars at speeds of up to 45 knots. An advanced ride control algorithm will ensure smooth sailings even in five-metre swells.
The ferry, which will be of carbon composite construction, is scheduled to enter service by 2025.
