The first of two Austal Australia-built 118-metre trimaran ferries ordered by Fred Olsen Express of the Canary Islands has completed a rigorous program of sea trials in the waters off Western Australia.
After launching in February, Bajamar Express has successfully completed sea trials off the coast of Perth, prior to the planned delivery of the vessel in June 2020.
Over the past weeks, the ferry has achieved an average speed of 37.6 knots at 85 per cent MCR (power), carrying 80 per cent from maximum deadweight (cargo capacity). The maximum speed achieved was in excess of 42 knots.
Capable of transporting 1,100 passengers and 276 cars, Bajamar Express and sister vessel Bañaderos Express will also feature multiple bars, kiosks, a retail shop, and children's play area. These will operate on Fred Olsen Express' Santa Cruz, Teneriffe and Agaete, Gran Canaria routes in the Canary Islands beginning in the third quarter of 2020.
