The Port of Townsville in Queensland has awarded a channel upgrade contract worth AU$232 million (US$172 million) to local marine projects company Hall Contracting.
The works include capital dredging to widen 14.9 kilometres of sea channels over two years and reclamation of 62 hectares of land through beneficial reuse of dredged material. The wider channel will allow vessels of up to 300 metres in length to safely access the port.
The new contract follows the extensive work over the past 18 months to build a 2.2-kilometre rock perimeter wall to receive the material.
Hall Contracting has partnered with Pacific Marine Group for the dredging and reclamation works.
