GEAR | Cummins X15 dives into marine market

Cummins has released a marine version of its X15 engine, targeting commercial marine applications with variable speed and fixed speed ratings from 450 to 600 horsepower (335 to 450 kilowatts).

Designed to withstand high-hour, continuous duty operation with long life-to-overhaul, the X15 meets US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 3 and International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Tier II emissions standards.

"Following the introduction of our marine QSK95 engine, which has more power and durability than any other high speed marine engine in its class, our new marine X15 reinforces our commitment to deliver the products our customers need to be successful," said Jim Schacht, executive director of Cummins' global marine business.

Cummins launched its first marine diesel engine 100 years ago, in a shrimp boat in 1919. Recent years have seen a growing demand for an engine to fit in the niche between the 10.8-litre QSM11 and 19-litre QSK19. The X15 has been launched to meet this demand from the marine sector.

The X15 incorporates the Cummins XPI ("extreme pressure injection") common rail fuel system that delivers injection pressures over 37,000 psi, which results in a more efficient fuel burn, reduced emissions and optimised fuel economy.

The system is controlled by the CM2350 engine control module designed to provide advanced diagnostic and monitoring capability, as well as engine protection through de-rates and automated engine shut downs to prevent catastrophic failures. The CM2350 technology also integrates fuel sensor monitoring, digital engine start/stop functionality and gear pressure and temperature.
