Consortium unveils images of future hydrogen-powered ferry for Orkney Islands

Scottish ferry line Caledonian Maritime Assets (CMAL) and naval architects the AqualisBraemar LOC Group (ABL Group) have unveiled the first images of a new Ro-Pax vessel concept design powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

The double-ended vessel is being developed as part of a €10 million (US$11.6 million) project by the HySeas III Consortium, which is composed of CMAL, the ABL Group, Kongsberg Maritime, Ballard Power Systems, Orkney Island Council, and McPhy Energy. More than €7 million (US$8.15 million) in funding is provided by the EU.

The ferry’s area of operations will encompass Scotland’s Orkney Islands.
